How Long Does Swelling Last After a Facelift?

Swelling is a natural part of facelift recovery and an important sign that your body is healing. While each person heals at a different pace, understanding the general timeline can help you prepare—especially if you're traveling to Korea for surgery.

General Swelling Timeline After a Facelift

Week 1 (Days 1–7):
Swelling peaks during the first 2 to 3 days after surgery. The face may look puffy or bruised, especially around the cheeks, jawline, and neck. Some patients also experience tightness and mild discomfort. Cold compresses and elevation can help manage swelling during this period.

Week 2:
Most major swelling begins to subside, and bruising starts to fade. Many patients feel comfortable going outside with light makeup or a mask. Stitches are often removed around this time.

Weeks 3–4:
Residual swelling continues to decrease. The face starts looking more natural, though some tightness and minor puffiness may persist, especially in the mornings.

1 to 3 Months Post-Surgery:
Swelling becomes very minimal and is usually only noticeable to you. The final contours of your facelift begin to settle and refine.

3 to 6 Months:
By this point, the swelling is typically gone, and your full facelift results are visible.

Factors That Affect Swelling Duration

  • Type of facelift (mini, SMAS, deep-plane, thread lift)
  • Extent of surgery and whether additional procedures were done (e.g., neck lift, fat grafting)
  • Individual healing speed, age, and skin condition
  • Post-operative care such as proper rest, hydration, and avoiding smoking or alcohol

Tips to Reduce Swelling After a Facelift

  • Sleep with your head elevated for at least 1–2 weeks
  • Apply cold compresses for short periods during the first few days
  • Follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully
  • Avoid strenuous activity and sun exposure during early recovery
  • Stay hydrated and eat anti-inflammatory foods

Swelling after a facelift in Korea is completely normal and usually resolves within 2 to 3 months, with major improvements in the first few weeks. While it can be a bit uncomfortable at first, patience and proper care will help you achieve the refreshed, youthful look you’re aiming for.
